Has there been any work done to differentiate between skipped steps/blockages and filament runout?

In reply to Dan Cook. That is not a bad idea at all. Pressing pause in OctoPrint when the filament runs out seems like a great idea! Implementing this does require some manual medling on Redeem, but get back to me when you have a working sensor set up, and we can get that fixed!

In reply to Dan Cook. Oops, I just realized the question was answered above: Currently, if an alarm is triggered, it will send a "pause" action command to OctoPrint.

I’ll ask for forgiveness in advance if this is a stupid question… From my experiences with my stock Cubex Duo when the filament runs out on the 8th hour of a 12 hour print, it’s considered a failed print…

Is it possible for the software to pause the printing if the sensor reports that the filament has run out? I understand that this may be a bad idea in some cases.
